Your First Year as a Teach Baton Rouge Teacher
As a first year teacher, in addition to participating in district requirements for new teachers like the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program (LTAAP) and FIRST Steps, you will spend a great deal of time outside of school planning lessons, grading work, and developing new instructional strategies.
During your first year as a Teach Baton Rouge teacher, you will receive intensive professional support from the Practitioner Teacher Program (PTP) and Teach Baton Rouge to make your lesson planning and instructional choices as effective as possible. At the same time, however, the Practitioner Teacher Program requires a significant financial and time investment on your part.
In addition to fulfilling your regular teaching duties, you will be expected to attend many professional development events in order to fulfill PTP requirements, as well as pay a tuition fee. The expected costs and time commitments for your first year of teaching are outlined below.
Certification Costs The tuition per participant for the PTP was approximately $3400 during the 2008-09 school year. We expect the tuition to be approximately the same for the 2009-10 school year. However, because of district subsidies, current program members are paying approximately $2200 in tuition. We are hopeful that subsidization will be available to new participants. This year, the tuition was paid via monthly bank drafts or in one installment due in mid-October.

Certification Time Commitment
During your first year of teaching, you will be expected to fulfill at least 180 hours of professional development outside of your regular teaching duties in order to meet the PTP requirements. These hours will be completed through the following activities:
Content Seminars Program members will meet about twice a month with a small group of practitioner teachers, led by a master teacher. Content seminars will generally last about three hours, and will require outside work. Content seminars will focus on student achievement, content-related pedagogy, and will help practitioner teachers prepare their Performance Assessment System.
Professional Development Opportunities Program members can attend numerous professional development opportunities provided by local professional development organizations. In addition Teach Baton Rouge will offer professional development opportunities specifically designed for program members.
Observations During your first year, you will be observed at least twice by the Teach Baton Rouge program director. These observations are meant to help you identify strategies to improve instruction in your classroom. After each observation, you will have a 30 minute post-observation conference.
Performance Assessment System (PAS) At the end of your first year of teaching, you will submit your Performance Assessment System, an evaluation tool used to determine your eligibility for Louisiana certification. The PAS is a comprehensive demonstration of your instructional performance and your impact on student achievement. Although you will work towards completing your PAS during your content seminars, you will have to spend a great deal of time working on your PAS outside of those meetings.
